ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION

Our environment education package is tailored for the different schools level, primary and secondary. We work with a network of 20 primary schools and seven secondary schools around Mabira forest. The program combines the community conservation education program for communities. Every year a theme is selected and an environment festival is organized for schools and communities. The program entails tree planting in schools by establishing tree nurseries, construction of energy saving stoves for schools and households, training of environment education clubs, organizing environment education festivals among others. Participate in our environment program by donating time, money and other resources to learn about our program.  Contact environment education coordinator at mafico2003@yahoo.com  we also encourage volunteer to come and work with us , share experiences and fuse ideas towards the green thinking concept. Collaborative forest management
Mabira forest integrated community organization is the community link between the national forestry authority and the  several community interest groups participating in collaborative forest management around Mabira forest. Two of these community groups, i.e. conservation for future sustainable development (COFSDA) in Buvunya and Koko villages in Najjembe sub county and Nagojje community biodiversity association   (NACOBA) have signed agreements with the national forestry authority to co-manage forest compartments 176 and 225 respectively. The other several upcoming organizations in the different stages of collaborative forest management (CFM) are Kinoni, Sesse, Wasswa, Nakalanga and

CRAFTS

The Mabira women crafts groups is one such common  interest group nurtured by mafico . the group brings together women from the seven parishes that make up Najjembe sub county from the several community interest groups. The  crafts shop was developed off the kampala-jinja highway at the gateway to the Mabira ecotourism centre at Najjembe. The crafts from the different women groups are marked, labellled and marketed at this outlet here, targeting visitors to the ecotourism centre and the passing population along the highway. The group has developed capacities in natural colors formulation, craft materials identification  and weaving, but needs to be taken to higher level bulk marketing of their products. At present arrangements that lead the group into” fair trade” are highly welcome.  You can also volunteer with us and cause change in the lives of the forest women around Mabira.

HEALTH

We work with two local government health centres, Najjembe health centre 111 and Nagojje health centre 111. The two offer a range of services such as immunization, antenatal and postal natal counseling, general treatment of common sickness, HIV/AIDS counseling and community outreach programmes.
Mafico has closely worked with these health centres in the community score card program and the program to make more efficient the older persons health rights, which resulted into the gazzettement of Thursday of every week as the day for the older persons to receive care. The health centres require support both financially and materially.  You can contribute to the improvement of the health status of the forest people, through donations or as volunteers, or participate in the older persons program to create a change in their lives.

NURSERY MANAGEMENT AND TREE PLANTING ACTIVITIES

The organization manages a tree nursery, and raises indigenous tree species for enrichment planting, and planting on farmland but managed on a commercial basis, large orders are sometimes made. Communities participate in a range of activities such as seed identification and selection, soil selection, potting and other nursery related activities.  Tree planting activities are combined with environment education and conservation festivals.
